8 Easy Prompts and Poses for a Beautiful PNW Maternity Session

Maternity sessions are all about capturing that beautiful time in your life when you're expecting a baby! Whether you’re looking to keep it simple, elegant, or fun, I’ve gathered my 8 go-to prompts and poses that will help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and truly showcase the love between you and your partner as you wait for your baby! This post will also help photographers who may need inspiration!

1. The Behind Hug

One of the sweetest and most intimate poses, the behind hug works wonderfully for capturing the connection between you and your partner. Have your partner stand or sit behind you, wrapping their arms around your belly. This pose gives a beautiful silhouette of your growing bump while emphasizing the love and support from your partner.

Tip: Play around with different angles—try a shot with your clients’ side profile for variety.

2. The Close-Up

Sometimes, less is more! A close-up of just the belly (or both of your hands gently resting on it) can make a striking image.

3. Entangled Arms

For a playful pose, try entangling your arms with your partner's as seen above. This pose works to show a sense of closeness and support. You can do this while standing or sitting, and it’s a great way to convey emotional connection in your session.

Tip: You can look at each other or focus on your belly for a more intimate and heartfelt moment.

4. The Playful Walk

A little movement always adds energy to your maternity photos! For a fun shot, try walking hand-in-hand with your partner. I may even ask you to make each other laugh or fake laugh (which often turns into real laughter!) The gentle motion will give your photos a candid, natural vibe and can be done without much direction.

Tip: Don’t worry about looking directly at the camera—just focus on enjoying the moment!

5. Heads Together

This simple yet powerful pose is great for showing the emotional connection between you and your partner. Stand close together, with your foreheads or cheeks gently touching and looking down at your partner’s bump. It’s such an affectionate pose.

Tip: You can also look at each other or sneak a kiss for some variety!

6. Play with Your Hair (Just Mom)

If you want to feel less “posed,” a simple “play with your hair” image can add a lovely touch of personality to your maternity session. It may feel awkward at first, but I promise you the results will be beautiful! Either place your hand above your head as pictured above or twirl your hair while looking at the camera or off into the distance.

Tip: Your hair being down works best for this prompt.

7. Dancing

If you're feeling playful, have your partner spin you around, or sway together to capture some fun, candid moments.

Tip: Have the lead dance partner use the arm furthest away from the photographer so you don’t show us your belly or underwear too!

8. Belly Kisses

One of the sweetest and most tender poses is a belly kiss. Have your partner gently kiss or place their lips on your belly, which creates a moment of connection between them and the baby. This pose often evokes a lot of emotion and love and is always a fan favorite for maternity sessions.

Tip: I love capturing the genuine emotions behind this—whether your partner is looking at the belly or at you, the focus is always on that moment of anticipation and love.

In Conclusion, maternity sessions are about capturing the love and excitement that comes with expecting a baby. With these prompts and poses, you’ll feel comfortable and relaxed while creating a stunning collection of memories for you to look back on. Whether you want intimate, playful, or timeless shots, I will help guide you through every step of the process and help you feel their best.
